The Australian journalist who infamously told Adele he had not listened to her new album 30, while interviewing her about said new album, has apologised on-air after receiving a torrent of abuse.

Channel 7 journalist Matt Doran took to the air on Friday for morning show Sunrise, where he said he wanted to address and apologise for the situation.

‘This is a story that has sparked a torrent of abuse and mockery from around the world’, he said, but added: ‘The bulk of this savaging I deserve and I totally own.’

He went on to apologise to Adele and to her fans, saying he had ‘insulted’ her.

‘I would have never knowingly disrespected you by deliberately not listening to your work’, he addressed the singer directly. ‘I am so, so sorry.’

Matt also apologised to Adele’s Australian fans and the Channel 7 audience who would miss out on the interview ‘through my error’.

He explained that, ‘hand on my heart’, he missed the email where Sony had sent him a link to Adele’s new album, and assumed they wouldn’t have shared her new music as it was ‘the industry’s most prized secret’.

Matt added: ‘It’s the most important email I’ve ever missed.’

The distinguished journalist said the interview was to be one of the ‘highlights of my career’, but accepted he made a ‘terrible mistake’.

Matt had travelled from Australia to London to interview the Easy On Me singer as part of a reported $1million (£540,000) deal between his channel, Sony Pictures and CBS.

However, after Matt revealed to Adele during the interview that he hadn’t listened to the album, Sony banned Channel 7 from airing footage from the interview.

Rumours had also swirled that the Chasing Pavements singer walked out in protest, however Matt denied this in his apology.

‘Adele didn’t walk out, it ran overtime’, he said, and during their 29 minutes together she ‘was profound, she was funny, she was raw, and she was honest.’
