So who was Zofia Nasierowska? Here’s all you need to know.

Who was Zofia Nasierowska?

Nasierowska was born in the town of Łomianki, near the Polish capital Warsaw, in 1938. Her father, Eugeniusz, was a renowned photographer.

Nasierowska started taking photographs aged seven under instruction from her father. She went on to study at Leon Schiller National Film School in Łódź. Her fellow students included the film director Roman Polanski.

In 1956, she became a member of the Związek Polskich Artystów Fotografików — the Association of Polish Art Photographers. She was also inducted into the International Federation of Photographic Art.

During the 1960s and 70s, her photos began to be used as covers for several Polish publications and magazines. These included Ekran, Zwierciadło, and Przekrój, which are all household names in Poland.

Her 35-year career as a photographer ended when she developed an eye disease.

At that point, she moved to Elk in the north-east Polish region of Masuria with her husband Janusz Majewski.

“She invested into and helped develop the community, and the city’s library was renamed in her honour,” Google’s tribute added.

Ms Nasierowska died in October 2011, aged 73, in Warsaw after a long illness. She was buried at Powazki Military Cemetery in the western part of Warsaw.

Her Google Doodle is being shown in Poland, the UK, Iceland and parts of South America.

A Google Doodle is a special, temporary alteration of the logo on Google’s homepages intended to commemorate holidays, events, achievements, and notable historical figures The search engine provides a Doodle several times a month in place of the Google heading on its homepage.

On Sunday, British users were given a new background to celebrate St George’s Day.
