Xisco Munoz joins Sheffield Wednesday as new manager
Xisco Munoz has been unveiled as the new manager of Sheffield Wednesday.
The 42-year-old has succeeded Darren Moore, whose Sheffield Wednesday departure was confirmed 21 days after he guided the club to promotion via the League One play-offs.
Munoz, who is travelling to England to complete formalities, spent nine months in charge of Watford between 2020 and 2021 and guided the club to promotion to the Premier League.
Since leaving Watford in October 2021, Munoz has had brief spells in charge of Spanish second tier side Huesca and Cypriot first division outfit Anorthosis.
Prior to turning his hand to management, Munoz enjoyed an 18-year playing career, representing Valencia, Real Betis and Levante in his native Spain and Dinamo Tbilisi in the Georgian top flight.
Danny Rohl, Germany’s assistant manager, was also considered and made it to the final stage but was pipped to the post by Munoz.
Sheffield Wednesday finished third in League One last season before overcoming a 4-0 first-leg deficit in the play-off semi-finals against Peterborough United to book their place in the final.
Wednesday beat Yorkshire rivals Barnsley at Wembley thanks to a 123rd minute Josh Windass winner.
Their play-off final victory means Munoz has taken charge of a Wednesday side who will be playing Championship football for the first time since the 2020-21 season next term, following two years in League One.
