Who won the Eurovision Song Contest last year in 2023?

We gather around the telly, we eat European country-themed snacks and we shout "nul points". But do any of us remember the previous year's Eurovision Song Contest winner after the end credits roll?

The final, which was watched last year by 162 million worldwide, is back in mere days. But while there's a lot of talk of UK entry Olly Alexander, Israel's entry and the enthusiasm of fans getting ready to hit host city Malmö for 2024, let's rewind.

Who won Eurovision 2023?

The 67th Eurovision Song Contest was won by Swedish entry Loreen with the song 'Tattoo'. Sweden now has seven victories in the Eurovision Song Contest, equalling Ireland’s record set in 1996.

The winning song took the prize with 583 points. In second place was Finland with 526 points, represented by Käärijä, singing Cha, Cha, Cha. Third place went to Israel, with Noa Kirel singing Unicorn, with 362 points.

Didn't she win before?

She did. Loreen is only the second artist to win the Eurovision Song Contest twice, and the only female artist, following her victory in 2012 with Euphoria.

Because of her victory, the 2024 contest is in the Swedish city of Malmö. The Grand Final takes place on Saturday, May 11.

Where was Eurovision 2023 held?

The Grand Final of the world’s largest live music event, was held on Saturday, May 13, in Liverpool. There were 26 countries taking part.

Following the performances of the 26 Grand Finalists, the results of the juries in the 37 participating nations who voted on Friday’s dress rehearsal were given out leaving Sweden in the lead. This was followed by a sequence where viewers’ televotes for each competing country were combined and added to the scoreboard resulting in an exciting finale that saw Sweden take the trophy.

Where did the UK finish in Eurovision 2023?

In the final, the United Kingdom placed 25th with 24 points. Mae Muller's song I Wrote A Song was less of a hit than the 2022 United Kingdom entry, Space Man by Sam Ryder.

The competition was hosted by the BBC in the UK on behalf of Ukraine following Kalush Orchestra’s win for their country in Turin in May 2022.

How many people watched Eurovision 2023?

An estimated audience of over 160 million will have seen last year's contest. It was broadcast live in the 37 participating countries and online on TikTok and YouTube.

The 26 finalists performed live in front of an audience of over 6,000 inside the Liverpool Arena. The Grand Final also saw a Flag Parade featuring former Ukrainian Eurovision acts and all 26 competing artists.
