Inside the drastic measures Vicky Pattison took to investigate
Vicky Pattison has investigated the rise in deepfake sex tapes for an eye-opening Channel 4 documentary, but just how much digging did she do for the show?

Geordie Shore legend Vicky Pattison, 37, has delved into the world of fake pornographic videos for a Channel 4 documentary named Vicky Pattison: My Deepfake Sex Tape. As part of the programme, she took the extreme measure of uploading a deepfake sex tape created by AI to get to the bottom of the situation, which has caused controversy.

She admittedly “wrestled with the decision” for a long time before accepting that the video “may live online forever”. Vicky told The Sun she made the video to “fully immerse herself in this world, and properly understand the depth of shock and violation victims of image-based abuse feel".

The reality television star added: "This is just the latest trend in the abuse of women and having met some of the inspirational women who have put their lives back together after being victims of sexually explicit deepfake abuse, I feel more strongly than ever that we need to stand with them and continue to put pressure on the greater powers within the Government to catch up with the speed at which this technology is advancing.”

Speaking to ITV chat host Lorraine Kelly this morning, Vicky confirmed her decision had "ruffled some feathers", but explained her reasons for uploading the deepfake video as she addressed how involved she got with the programme.

Vicky told Lorriane viewers: "I completely understand that this has been a divisive way to share information about deepfake AI and to spread awareness. I know that we've been loud and deliberate, and I know that it has ruffled some feathers.

"Anybody who feels any type of way about it, I completely understand their feelings and they're valid, I'm not trying to trivialise them."

However, the former I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! winner went on to say the number of deepfakes being created was on the rise, and she was taken aback to discover that the technology used to make them only targeted females as it could not recognise a male body.

Vicky, who worked on the programme alongside her husband, Ercan Ramadan, said: "We had an inclination that the technology that these apps use won't register a man's body, so we put my husband through. He's been an incredibly good sport throughout all of this, I don't think this is how he saw the first six months of our marriage. It gave him female body parts."

She added: “The issue of consent is nothing new, the issue of violence against women is nothing new, but this is the latest iteration in that wave of abuse and violence against women, and it's terrifying. They are not only taking away a woman's right to choose, what they're creating is very degrading and very violent."

Reflecting on the future of AI, a concerned Vicky shared: "The bit that gets me is that obviously I got married last year. Erc and I would love to try for a family. What world are we bringing little girls up in?"

“What are we teaching young lads? This problem, it is affecting women - as we've seen, the technology doesn't even recognise a man's body - but it is affecting girls as well, it's affecting children."

Her doc has come under fire from real-life victims of deepfake pornography. According to The Independent, one woman who wished to remain anonymous felt the show "trivialises the issue and it feels wrong". Others have argued the documentary could encourage viewers to make deepfakes.

A Channel 4 spokesperson responded to the criticism, stating Vicky wanted to “demonstrate how simple it is to create explicit deepfake content and raise awareness of how accessible this content is”.

It added: "She also wanted to experience, as closely as possible, the feelings, vulnerabilities and concerns that arise when one becomes a victim of deepfake porn. The documentary recreates this, in a controlled environment, to exemplify the ease with which this kind of content can spread online and to raise awareness by demonstrating actions people can take should they find themselves a victim of this crime.

Vicky Pattison: My Deepfake Sex Tape airs tonight (Tuesday, January 28) on Channel 4 and will be available to watch on All4.
