Worried Sheffield residents speak out amid 'armed man' police ...

Worried Sheffield residents have spoken out after a police standoff with an 'armed man' caused mass evacuations.

Emergency crews were called to a Broad Street address in Castlegate, just off Sheffield Parkway just after 7pm on Monday, February 10 after reports of a man carrying weapons. Surrounding properties, including flat blocks, have been evacuated, in the 24 hours since then, with affected residents being cared for by Sheffield City Council at Ponds Forge.

Meanwhile, the A61 Sheffield Parkway between Park Square roundabout and Derek Dooley Way remains closed, causing congestion on all approaches towards the city centre. South Yorkshire Police issued a statement on social media yesterday, informing its followers of the road closures and travel disruption.

Residents posted to social media of their shock as neighbours were evacuated from the homes. Among them was Ellen Thoday, who posted: "Police are telling people they don't know how long it will be and been told to find somewhere else to stay as I live in the Pinnacles. Drones are everywhere and there was a guy at the top of the gateway. Stay safe everyone."

Thomas Cheetham said: "Everyone been evacuated from the building and about 13 armed police car outside my friend lives there. Seems they have moved the residents to ponds forge for now."

Tamara Zoe said: "Hope everyone is okay. If there have been reports of something of this nature they will be following particular protocols and training in response."

Berni King said: "That's really awful for people being evacuated until this time. Glad everyone is safe but must be horrible stuck there, hope it's sorted soon so everyone can get back home, stay safe everyone.."

Emma Glossop said: "I live on Hyde Park flats and it's like a scene out of CSI." Joanie Alexandria said: "I'm in Skegness and my 18 year old daughter has been informed to not leave her uni residence at the Pinnacles.
