Tavernier convinced Rangers can produce miraculous Europa League comeback against Bayer Leverkusen
JAMES TAVERNIER is convinced Rangers can produce a miraculous Europa League comeback in Germany on Thursday.
The Ibrox skipper accepts the odds are stacked against them following a 3-1 home defeat to Bayer Leverkusen before March’s lockdown.
But the right-back insists the stunning away displays against Braga and Porto last season give them genuine grounds for optimism.
Rangers have punched well above their weight in Europe under boss Steven Gerrard over the past two seasons.
And Tavernier has not given up hope of them reaching the quarter- finals to face Inter Milan or Getafe, despite having a mountain to climb.
He said: “We’ve had some great nights in European football and I believe we can deliver the game plan needed to try and bring the tie back.
“It’s a 90-minute game and we know we have to shut up shop at the back.
“We need to keep a clean sheet and create chances to give the midfielders and attackers the opportunity to score.
“It’s been an incredible journey from last season into this one with the teams we’ve overcome.
“And that gives us great belief we can go toe to toe with the giants of European football.

Tav is adamant they have nothing to fear from the Bundesliga outfit.
He said: “Leverkusen are definitely up there with the best teams we’ve faced in Europe.
“They’ve got a great squad and it will be a tough test going over to Germany — but we’re all raring to go.
“It’s going to take a good performance as we’re on the back foot.
“But we’ve always done well in Europe and we had good pre-season tests against Lyon and Nice.
“We need to go over there and give it our all and hopefully we can bring it back.
“I’m delighted we have the chance to finish the tie. That’s the important thing for us.”
