Cambuslang Rangers boss wont make bold title predictions but
Paul McColl has assembled an entirely new team and backroom staff ahead of the league kick-off

Cambuslang Rangers boss Paul McColl isn’t making bold predictions of a title tilt as they head into the West of Scotland League First Division, but does hope they can challenge.

Camby came down from the Premier League last season following a miserable, if brave, campaign and have signed virtually an entirely new squad for the season ahead.

That kicks off at home to league favourites Kilwinning Rangers, with a trip to Thorniewood United on Wednesday, and McColl reckons that will show them what they are up against.

But McColl reiterates that there are plenty of clubs in the division who are able to spend big, while they’re on a shoestring.

McColl said: “It’s a tough league and it would be stupid to say you’re going to go on and win it, because it’s a really competitive division.

“But hopefully we can get up there.

“Last year we had Shotts and Glencairn down near the bottom of the league at one point and they’re good teams, so it’s very difficult to put your finger on what you’re going to do.

“We’ve just got a new team, so it’s going to be hard, but we’ll try our best and get as high as we can, and take it from there.”

McColl says he’s in the process of signing a trialist striker who has scored in pre-season as he bids to further boost his squad.

Holidays and injuries have left him without a full squad to choose from, but McColl reckons he will have a strong team out to face Kilwinning at Somervell Park.

He said: “It’s the real stuff on Saturday.

“We’ll have a couple of good sessions this week; we were thinking about arranging a friendly, but we’ve changed our mind on that just in case somebody gets injured.

“Kilwinning will be a hard game, we’re a new team and we’re still trying things out, but we’ll pick hopefully a decent side for Saturday and we’re at home, which helps.

“It’s a tough one, they’ll be one of the favourites to win it.

“I don’t know what their budget is but it will be more than ours, anyway!

“It will be a tough game.”

Camby ended their pre-season programme with a win over Glasgow United on Saturday, and McColl reckons they’re ready.

He said: “It has been good and bad in pre-season, but that’s the same with most teams – even your Darvels lose games sometimes.

“We just need to get on with it.

“On Saturday we started OK then fell out of it a bit, came into the game and missed some pure sitters, but we got a wee win and a couple of goals, so it was good.

“I’ve got a trialist who I’m trying to sign and he scored two on Saturday and one in the week. I’m pretty sure he will come in.

“There are some guys with injuries just now and some of the guys who have come in are on holiday.

“It’s hard when you’re trying to get players in, with limited money to spend. Some of the other teams have mad money and we just can’t pay that.”
