Retired surgeon Mr Perks, 65, was stabbed in the chest after allegedly confronting an intruder during a break-in at his home.

Brooks today appeared at Nottingham Magistrates' Court charged with attempted murder, three counts of attempted arson with intent to endanger life, and possession of a knife in a public place.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Nottingham Crown Court on February 15.

Retired leading plastic surgeon Mr Perks remained in a 'serious but stable' condition in intensive care, police confirmed today.

The dad-of-four is said to have been alerted by breaking glass at his £800,000 former vicarage home in Halam, Notts, in the early hours of Thursday.

He suffered wounds to his abdomen and chest and remains fighting for his life in hospital.

Police quizzed neighbours while scenes of crime teams searched his £600,000 home.

Det Insp Gayle Hart said: "Our investigations into this case have led us to charge a man.

"We are not now looking for anyone else in connection with this investigation.

"The victim is still in the intensive care unit and is still in a serious but stable condition. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

“If anyone has any information in relation to this case we would urge them to still contact us.”

Mr Perks was president of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons. He was also head of the department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Burns Surgery at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

He left his position at the private BMI The Park Hospital in Nottingham in 2019 to work with charity Médecins sans Frontières.

Current BAPRAS president Ruth Waters said: "All have expressed their shock at what has happened and also their deep concern for his wellbeing and their hope for his speedy recovery.

"It has been my good fortune and honour to know Graeme for many years. I have benefited from his kindness, generosity and extensive knowledge throughout my career in plastic surgery."

Outgoing BAPRAS president Mark Henley said: "Graeme is an amazing colleague who it has been my pleasure and privilege to work with over the last 26 years.

"His dedication to patients, family and friends is an inspiration to us all and with his wisdom, kindness and humanity he has enabled us to achieve many things that I would never have thought possible. We are all willing him on."

In a statement, BAPRAS said: "Graeme Perks is one of the most highly regarded and respected surgeons in the profession."
