Spanish defender has been accused of being involved in an altercation with a ball boy during Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at Liverpool and could face retrospective action

Liverpool are investigating allegations against Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Jonny over claims that he was involved in an altercation with a ball boy during Sunday’s Premier League encounter at Anfield.

The 25-year-old wing-back has been accused of making contact with one of the Anfield ball boys while attempting to retrieve the ball during Wolves’s 1-0 defeat, with both clubs aware of the allegations.

A Liverpool statement read: "The club will follow established protocols in terms of gathering the relevant information.

"While that process takes place we will be making no further comment."

Wolves confirmed that they are aware of the allegations but will await further information from their Premier League rivals before making comments.

It’s understood that the alleged incident took place in front of the Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand during the controversial victory for the league leaders.

If the Spaniard is found to have a case to answer, he could face retrospective action from the Football Association, who could choose to ban him.

Former Chelsea forward Eden Hazard was sent off in January 2013 when he was judged to have kicked a ball boy at the Liberty Stadium in a league clash with Swansea, which saw him receive the regulatory three-match ban for violent conduct.

Wolves saw their hopes of beating the top two in the league go up in smoke on Sunday in what proved a controversial affair thanks to two dubious VAR decisions – one of which Jonny proved to be at the centre of.

The first saw Sadio Mane’s disallowed goal be reinstated despite referee Anthony Taylor deeming the Senegalese international to have benefitted from an Adam Lallana hand ball in the build-up, only for the decision to be overturned by the VAR.

Wolves appeared to have scored an equaliser before half-time through Pedro Neto, only for Jonny to be ruled offside by half-a-foot in the build-up to the goal, allowing Liverpool to hold on to victory and go into 2020 13 points clear at the top of the table.
