John Nettles shares threeword response as he addresses Bergerac
Bergerac is making a comeback over 30 years after the original series ended, but fans won't be seeing a surprise appearance from John Nettles in the reboot

Earlier this year, fans of the hit show Bergerac were thrilled to discover that a reboot was on the cards, a full three decades after the curtains closed on the original series.

The original series, which ran from 1981 to 1991, had viewers tuning in avidly as John Nettles embodied the role of Detective Jim Bergerac, tackling criminal activities against the scenic backdrop of Jersey.

But this time around, a fresh face will take the mantle, as actor Damien Molony steps into the legendary detective shoes for the new six-part instalment.

Despite the excitement surrounding the relaunch, admirers of the original series won't be spotting any nostalgic gestures from John Nettles.

While speaking to the BBC, he shared the reason people won't spot him making any surprise appearances, reports the Express.

On Thursday's BBC Breakfast, the show offered fans a sneak peek into what lies ahead for the series, complete with interviews with cast members.

During a conversation with John, they explored whether he had been approached for a cameo.

He replied: "I got a lovely letter from them, they said will you come along and do a little cameo at the end?

"I thought, no because that would get in the way of the actual production. It would destroy, in some sense, the integrity of the production, I thought.

"In any case, I'm too old and I've retired, I've got to face up to that."

Adding to the insight, Tim Renouf, an actor slated to appear in the new series, hinted at what audiences could anticipate from the reinvented Bergerac.

He revealed: "The framework of the story is the same in terms of it's about Bergerac, it's about him coming back to the force and getting back into investigating crime so that's the same.

"It's still going to have that glamour that I think we remember and have fond memories of in the original, but it's going to be grittier, the stories probably a bit darker."

The up-and-coming revival also welcomes actress Zoe Wanamaker to the cast as Charlie, the on-screen mother-in-law to Jim Bergerac.

Actor Philip Glenister is set to grace the show too, alongside numerous Jersey residents who'll be featured as extras.

Bergerac will air on Drama in 2025 and be available to stream for free on UKTV Play.
