Jamie Carragher has admitted that he was wrong to criticise Edu for his activity in the transfer market two years ago.

Jamie Carragher has admitted that he was wrong about Aaron Ramsdale when he was originally signed by Arsenal director Edu in the wake of his impressive performance against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon. Ramsdale was unable to prevent Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino from earning the Reds a draw but managed to stop them claiming all three points with a string of fine saves as the clock ticked down.

Ramsdale was quick to react to a deflected effort from Salah by tipping it over the crossbar before denying Ibrahima Konate what looked to have been a certain goal from close range, which saw Carragher admit that he was wide of the mark in his initial assessment of the shot-stopper as a poor signing for Arsenal.

"Listen, we all say different things at different times and you're proven wrong about managers, players, certain teams," the ex-Liverpool ace told Sky Sports.

"I don't think I've ever been more wrong, or certainly this season proven wrong, [than] by Aaron Ramsdale. I watched him at times obviously with different teams where he goes down, you see lots of goals go in, you think, 'Can the keeper do better there?'. And then when Arsenal bought him I was scratching my head.

"I'll be honest, I could not believe it when they bought him. But how he's overtaken [Bernd] Leno, he's had to move on, and his position in the England squad now as well."

Ramsdale's arrival at Arsenal two years ago raised plenty of eyebrows at the time, with many questions being asked over the £24million fee paid to secure his services from Sheffield United. He has since proved his doubters wrong by performing consistently well for the Gunners over the last couple of seasons and is now undoubtedly one of the first names on Mikel Arteta's team sheet each week.

The Spaniard was left delighted with Ramsdale's strong showing against Liverpool and said after the final whistle: "You need your goalkeeper if you want to win and be in a title race. Look at how many times Alisson has done for Liverpool what he has to do.

"Those magic moments from the keeper, we had some exceptional moments from our front players as well, and to win in grounds like that you need that. We’ve been responding for 31 games now, every single day is a test.

"The test now is how good are we going to be on Monday, and how well will we prepare and play the way we want to play to beat West Ham."
