Facebook Instagram and WhatsApp down as users experience
Disgruntled users have flocked to Twitter to complain about the mass outage

A number of Meta apps are down, leaving tens of thousands of users experiencing a major international outage at around 6pm UK time today.

This outage has affected a number of apps including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

Over 23,000 reports of Facebook being down were reported in the UK after 6pm, according to DownDetector, which tracks whether sites are up and running.

Meanwhile, users in the US made over 100,000 reports.

In response to the technical difficulties, Facebook has said: "We’re working on getting this fixed as soon as we can."

Additionally, over 70,000 reports that Instagram was down had been made to DownDetector.

WhatsApp is now back up and running.

However, as is customary, social media users immediately ran to Twitter to complain about Facebook and Instagram, with #FacebookDown and #InstagramDown trending.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

DownDetector received numerous reports that users were not able to access WhatsApp, which, like Instagram and Facebook, is owned by Meta.

Meta said: "We’re aware that a technical issue is impacting some users’ ability to access our apps.

"We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and apologise for any inconvenience."

The outage has manifested in various ways for different users, as some have complained that they have been deprived of posting content or seeing others' comments on posts.

However, some have found that their app simply runs slowly, while others cannot access the sites at all.

This outage is far from the first time the social media apps have been down, with the latest blackout across apps taking place earlier this year in October.

Earlier this year, Facebook users also experienced a mass outage as each profile struggled to log into their accounts.

Facebook's founder, Mark Zuckerberg, subsequently apologised, acknowledging that his social networks are fundamental to many individuals trying to keep in touch with family and friends across the globe.
