Today (27 January 2025) is Holocaust Memorial Day and Ashford Borough Council will again be commemorating the occasion, with this year’s HMD marking 80 years since liberation at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
The theme for 2025 is ‘For a better future,’ with the hope being that the day can bring people together and allow people to learn about the past, enabling them to help make a better future for everyone.
As with every year, one of the things you can do to commemorate is to light a candle and put it in your window at 8pm to help remember those lost.
Should you wish to share images on social media, the hashtags to use are #HolocaustMemorialDay and #LightTheDarkness.
In addition, at 7pm tonight on BBC 1, there will be a Holocaust Memorial Day ceremony, which will end asking people to join in with the Light the Darkness campaign at 8pm.
Holocaust Memorial Day brings thousands of people across the UK together, as we learn from the atrocities in the past to realise genocide doesn’t just happen on its own.
