"Tank" is applying pressure and counters with a right. He puts together a left-right combination seconds later. And another. Garcia with a combo of his own now but "Tank" returns fire. "Tank" Davis vs. Garcia; Round 3Left hand counter from Garcia that "Tank" nods off and smiles, which almost always means that it had affect. They trade shots in the center of the ring moments later. Left hand to the head connects for Garcia, who then misses with a big right. Solid round from Garcia, however, you just get the increased feeling that it's only a matter of time before "Tank" detonates something impactful. (10-9 Garcia, 30-27 Garcia)
"Tank" Davis vs. Garcia; Round 2Garcia is beginning to irk a forward-fighting Davis's progress as he pokes out that jab to keep "Tank" at bay. Gervonta "Tank" Davis vs. Hector Luis Garcia; Round 1Garcia opens up looking to split Davis's guard with the jab and already having some success with his reach advantage. "Tank" makes entrance to huge popMajor star power in effect as "Tank" makes his walk to the performing sounds of rapper Shy Glizzy.
Here comes Hector Luis GarciaThe challenger looks loose but focused as he's minutes away from the biggest fight of his life.
Main event timeWe are moments away from one of boxing's biggest superstars, Gervonta "Tank" Davis (27-0, 25 KOs), putting his WBA (regular) lightweight world title on the line against a very game Hector Luis Garcia (16-0, 10 KOs). A win here and "Tank" can look forward to the mega fight he has slated with Ryan Garcia for later this year.
Jaron Ennis cruises to unanimous decision, awaits world title opportunityJaron Ennis (30-0, 27 KOs with 1 NC) goes the distance. Judges score it 120-108 across the board in his favor. I had it 119-109.
"I should have got him out of here," Ennis told Jim Gray inside the ring moments after being named the interim IBF welterweight champion.
He added that he would "most definitely" like to meet the winner of Terence Crawford vs. Errol Spence as the boxing world waits for that super bout to be inked.
After a big right hook upstairs, Ennis sits on punches and makes several deposits to the body. The body work seems to have finally slowed Chukhadzhian's slippery movement. Ennis tallied a round-high 14 body punches as we head to the 11th. Ennis is up 9-1 (100-91)
Ennis's sound boxing is carrying him through nine rounds, though Chukhadzhian did catch him with several sneaky counters in the ninth. Still, "Boots" and his brand of sweet science are on another level. He's up 8-1 (89-82)
Look who visits "Tank" backstage Ennis in control through sixEnnis is tagging Chukhadzhian with a bevy of punches, welcoming him to the full repertoire. I have "Boots" up 5-1 (59-55) halfway.
Chukhadzhian delivers solid fourth roundChukhadzhian gets his left hook across Ennis's jaw and another left hook connects moments later for his best round yet.
Ennis cruising through threeHis switch hitting is already affecting Chukhadzhian as "Boots" makes it look easy. Chukhadzhian did catch him a few times in the third round but Ennis had the answer every time.
Ennis gets right to workEnnis already creates openings to land shots — both to the body and upstairs in this first round. Though Chukhadzhian has nice movement, it feels like just a matter of time before Ennis lands something of bigger impact.
Ennis makes walk"Boots" makes his walk to the sounds of fellow Philadelphia native Lil Uzi Vert's hit "Just Wanna Rock." Former NBA champion Stephen Jackson joins Ennis on his walk as this co-main is moments away from liftoff.
Co-main event is nextThe ever-scintillating Jaron “Boots” Ennis (29-0, 27 KOs) takes on Karen Chukhadzhian in welterweight action. The way Ennis can switch hit and change levels with style is a sight to behold.
Judges score it a majority decision — 113-113, 114-112, 114-112 — in favor of Roiman Villa. I thought Ellis still should have pulled this out on the strength of his earlier work but the judges clearly credited Villa for the two key knockdowns in the 12th round. The one in the final seconds pushed him over the top in their eyes. What an end to this fight.
What a finish!Villa dropped Ellis with a monstrous left hook and then makes Ellis taste the canvas again with a buzzer-beating left-right hook knockdown! The ropes held Ellis up there or it could have been worse.
Huge 10-7 round for Villa to end this fight. Let's see how it impacts the cards as we'll find out if Ellis built enough of a lead early to take this one.
Ellis is up comfortably on the cards but Villa has been using his power to deliver some eye-catching shots last few rounds, including the 10th that just ended. His overhand right is especially turning into a problem for Ellis.
