Julia Hartley Brewer has lead furious reaction to BBC presenter Gary Lineker after he compared the Government's migrant plan to Nazi Germany.

The Match Of The Day host is acing calls to be sacked for a tweet responding to a video of home secretary Suella Braverman unveiled new legislation to stop Channel migrant boats.

Julia said: "He's paid £1.3m per year out our taxes and he has been told again and again 'stop talking about divisive party political matters, you are a BBC employee!' Again and again he has defied that."

"I'm all for freedom of speech Gary, but not when you're a BBC employee, not when we are forced by law to pay your wages!

"You need to be studiously politically neutral - the public have told you that, your viewers have told you that, your own boss has told you that, now I'm telling you that!" Julia added.

TalkTV's Mike Graham tweeted: "Oh dear. @GaryLineker finally jumps the shark. And now the #BBC will have to do something…"

Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick told Times Radio: “My children are the grandchildren of Holocaust survivors and I think those sorts of words should not be thrown around lightly.

“They see people dying, literally, in the English Channel at the behest of some of the most evil criminal gangs we see in the world today and they want the Government to take action. That’s exactly what we intend to do.

“We’re going to stop the boats. We’re going to break the business model of these people smugglers and enable us to secure our borders. No-one would expect the Government to do anything other than that.”

Suella Braverman told the BBC Lineker’s comments were disappointing.

She said: “I’m disappointed, obviously. I think it’s unhelpful to compare our measures, which are lawful, proportionate and – indeed – compassionate, to 1930s Germany.

“I also think that we are on the side of the British people here.

“It’s plain for anyone to see that the British people have had enough of this situation of thousands of people coming here illegally at huge cost to the taxpayer and undermining our laws, and, in fact, British generosity.

“That needs to stop, we need to take the necessary steps now to ensure that if you are coming here illegally you will be detained and you will be removed, and that’s what this Bill will do.”

But later she said it was a matter for the BBC whether Gary Lineker was sacked for his “irresponsible” comments.

Asked if he should resign or be sacked, she said: “That’s a matter for the BBC and they will resolve that.”

She invited Lineker to visit Kent to “see what the communities in Kent and Dover and actually all around the UK are feeling about this issue”.
