Fulhams Harry Wilson strikes in 92nd and 97th minute to leave

At Craven Cottage, in a pulsating west London derby, Fulham took their time. The 90th minute had long passed when, finally, after almost incessant attacking pressure, the substitute Harry Wilson first deftly flicked Alex Iwobi’s cross beyond Mark Flekken to equalise, then with time almost over, sent the stadium doolally with a brilliant diving header from Antonee Robinson’s cross.

Just down the touchline from a delighted, bouncing Marco Silva, his Brentford opposite number Thomas Frank looked utterly crestfallen. As well he might. After securing an early lead through Thomas Janelt’s long range effort, his team had done their best to upend football’s long held prevailing wisdom is that forwards win matches, defenders win titles.

Because this was a game that seemed destined to be won by a back line magnificent in its obdurance, extraordinary in its refusal to yield. Yet, in rapturous scenes of home delight, it was Fulham who took the points. What a win this was.
