Maze star Frankie Beverly dies aged 77
Beverly's heartbroken family have described him as living his life with "pure soul"

LEGENDARY AMERICAN soul singer and songwriter Frankie Beverly has died.

The 77-year-old star was the co-founder of soul-funk band Maze – known for their hit songs Joy and Pain, We are One, Happy Feelin and the classic Before I Let Go.

His family announced his death and said: “Grieving the loss of a loved one is a deeply personal and emotional experience. During this time, we are navigating feelings of sorrow, reflection and remembrance.

“We kindly ask for privacy and understanding, allowing us the space to grieve in our own way.

“This period for is one of healing, and your respect for our need for solitude is appreciated as we honour the memory of our beloved Howard Stanley Beverly known to the world as Frankie Beverly.”

They added: “He lived his life with pure soul as one would say, and for us, no one did it better. He lived for his music, family and friends.

“Love one another as he would want that for us all.”

According to the statement, Beverly sadly died on September 10.

The beloved singer was honoured at this years’ Essence Festival in New Orleans, with a special tribute featuring Anthony Hamilton, Lil’ Mo, Doug E. Fresh, Luke James and the new lead singer of Maze, Tony Lindsay.

The Black American media outlet, paid tribute to Beverly on Instagram and wrote: “A voice that’s united generations, songs that capture the essence of the Black experience, and a heart that was as pure as gold as the records we spun.

“Frankie Beverly’s artistry wasn’t just about sound; it was the very thread that stitched together our collective memories and moments of joy.

“His melodies will forever echo in our hearts and continue to inspire. May the angels synchronise in unison and dance and give you one last standing ovation Before We Let Go.

The Essence tribute added: “The legend. The architect. Mr Essence Festival himself. Job well done. Ascend.”

Retirement

In February this year, Beverly announced his retirement.

His final tour was named the ‘I Wanna Thank You Farewell Tour’ to celebrate his incredible 50-year career in music.

“I want to share with my lifelong fans and associates that I’ll be going out on the road one last time, then retire,” Beverly said in a statement to Billboard magazine.

“It’s been a ride through the decades. Let the music of my legacy continue.”

In 2024, the NAACP Image Awards honoured Beverly with a Lifetime Achievement Award. He was also honoured at the 2012 BET Awards.

No details about Beverly’s cause of death have been released.
