ichael Keane made amends for giving away a penalty by scoring off a long-range thunderbolt in the 90th minute to earn Everton a 1-1 draw with Tottenham in a feisty English Premier League game that saw both teams finish with 10 men on Monday.

Some Everton fans jumped over the advertising hoardings to celebrate Keane’s dipping strike that took their team out of the relegation zone and stopped Tottenham from jumping to third place in its first match since the departure of manager Antonio Conte.

Harry Kane put Tottenham ahead at Goodison Park, converting a penalty in the 68th for his 22nd goal of the season after a foul by Michael Keane on Cristian Romero.

By that time, Kane, the England captain, was being jeered every time he touched the ball because of his central role in the sending off of Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure in the 58th.

Kane fell to the ground after being struck in the face by Doucoure as the two grappled in an off-the-ball incident.

Everton manager Sean Dyche likely wasn’t alone inside Goodison in thinking Kane made too much of an incident that saw Doucoure lash out at the striker after they grabbed each other’s shirts following their meaty challenge.

Tottenham couldn’t take advantage of its extra man, with Everton finishing the stronger — perhaps harboring a perceived sense of injustice — especially when the visitor was reduced to 10 men when substitute Lucas Moura was also shown a straight red card for a studs-first lunge on Keane’s ankle in the 89th.

Tottenham at least climbed one place to fourth place, the final Champions League spot, but will regard it as two points dropped.

Spurs are on the same number of points as third-placed Newcastle and fifth-placed Manchester United but have played two games more than both rivals.

Everton climbed three places to 15th but was only a point above the bottom three with nine games remaining in a tight race to avoid the drop.

Play was paused midway through the first half so the three Everton players participating in Ramadan — Doucoure, Amadou Onana and Idrissa Gueye — could break their fast.

During the Islamic holy month, fasting Muslims do not eat or drink during daylight hours.

Stellini echoes some of Conte’s outburst in message after Tottenham’s draw at Everton

Cristian Stellini says Tottenham must improve their “personality” following Monday’s disappointing draw at Everton.

For the second time in as many games, Spurs dropped points despite leading a side battling relegation late on after Michael Keane’s stunning goal had cancelled out Harry Kane’s penalty at Goodison Park.

The result takes Spurs back into fourth but they have played two more games than both Manchester United and Newcastle.

Stellini was overseeing his first game since being placed in interim charge after Antonio Conte’s departure.

Tottenham undermined by the problem Conte was at pains to point out

Tottenham began life after Antonio Conte in the same way they finished the Italian’s tenure: by conceding a 90th-minute equaliser and throwing away three points against a relegation-threatened side.

If Conte was watching at home in Italy, he might have felt vindicated in his blistering attack on his players after his final game in charge, when Spurs shipped two late goals to draw 3-3 with Southampton at St. Mary’s.

In the 16 days since Conte’s rant, he has left the club by mutual agreement and been replaced by his assistant Cristian Stellini, but Spurs delivered more of the same in a familiar late surrender that went some way to justifying the former manager’s claim that the squad does not like playing “under pressure”.

Leading 1-0 through Harry Kane’s 68th-minute penalty and with an extra man after Abdoulaye Doucoure was rashly sent off just before the hour for striking the England captain, Spurs should have been capable of comfortably seeing out the game.

Everton 1-1 Tottenham: Michael Keane strikes late to dent Champions League hopes

Everton defender Michael Keane’s stunning 90th-minute equaliser atoned for his error in conceding Tottenham’s penalty opener in a fractious 1-1 draw at Goodison Park in which both sides had a man sent off.

Harry Kane’s spot-kick looked set to give Spurs post-Antonio Conte a victory but it was the England captain’s involvement in the sending-off of Abdoulaye Doucoure which prompted most discussion - until Keane’s 30-yard screamer.

The country’s record scorer registered his 22nd league goal of the season but it was his over-reaction to Doucoure’s hand into his face, resulting in the Frenchman’s red card, 10 minutes previously which provoked the ire of Goodison.

In the 58th minute Kane fouled Demarai Gray in front of the technical area and then left his foot in on a tackle on Doucoure, who reacted angrily.

Tottenham player ratings vs Everton: Heung-min Son sloppy while Lucas Moura costs team dearly

Within ten minutes, Keane caught Cristian Romero in the box, and Kane dispatched the spot-kick to put Spurs ahead.

Referee David Coote had a third easy call to make when sub Lucas Moura caught Keane with a studs-up challenge was also shown a straight red before Keane levelled three minutes from time with a long-range stunner.
