Also written as Eid al-Fitr, this first of the two main Eid festivities in the Muslim calendar comes at the end of Ramadan and the start of the next month, Shawwal. As is customary on the 29th day of the month, officials and members of the public will be looking for the moon later today.

The new moon was 'born' early this morning and astronomers have forecast that its very first faint crescent won't be visible later today in the UK, Saudi Arabia, or North Africa. That would mean Ramadan going on one more day into Friday, and Eid then being on Saturday, April 22.

However, the lunar calendar in Saudi Arabia calculates Eid as happening a day earlier, on Friday, April 21. It could mean a divided Eid in the UK if some follow Saudi news and some look for the moon in Britain instead.
