Edinburgh Castle siege by group sees police officer injured and man arrested

A man has been arrested and a police officer injured following an incident at Edinburgh Castle on Tuesday (August 17).

Police Scotland has confirmed that an individual was taken into custody after a large group of protestors gathered in the grounds of the iconic Edinburgh landmark.

At around 5.05pm, a number of visitors to the Castle were quickly evacuated from the building and escorted out onto the Esplanade as the protest continued.

An updated statement from Police Scotland on Wednesday morning also confirmed that an officer had sustained "minor injuries" during the arrest.

After some time the group were dispersed from the area, with Edinburgh Castle to open as usual from Wednesday (August 18).

Superintendent Gerry Corrigan of Police Scotland said: “Officers attended at Edinburgh Castle following reports that a group of protesters had gathered within the Castle grounds at around 5.05pm on Tuesday, 17 August, 2021.

"The group later dispersed. One man was arrested for disorder related offences and a police officer sustained minor injuries during this arrest.
