This is the third and final part of the £900 cost of living support previously announced by the Government and it will be awarded to approximately eight million households

Millions of people claiming certain benefits will start to receive the last cost of living payment worth £299 from tomorrow.

This is the third and final part of the £900 cost of living support previously announced by the Government. It will be awarded to approximately eight million households. Two previous payments worth £301 and £300 have already been processed and given out to eligible UK homes.

But you may still get the final £299 instalment even if you didn't receive the first two payments - so how do you know if you’re eligible? Here is what you need to know - including which benefits you need to be claiming and the reasons why you may be refused the payment.

When is the payment due?

If you claim a benefit from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) then you can expect to be paid between February 6 and February 22. If you claim Tax Credits only from HMRC, you will be paid at the slightly later timeframe of between February 16 and February 22.

Which benefits do you need to be claiming?

You need to have been claiming one of these benefits between November 13 and December 12 last year. If you claim Universal Credit, you must have been eligible for a payment for an assessment period ending between these dates. The full list is as follows:

  • Universal Credit
  • Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Pension Credit

What about if I later become eligible for one of these benefits?

If you start claiming benefits and your claim gets backdated to the timeframe we've mentioned above, then it is possible you might be entitled to the cost of living payment. For example, you can backdate Pension Credit by three months and the deadline to do this, and be entitled to the £299 cost of living payment, is by March 5.

I claim one of benefits mentioned above - so why am I not eligible for the payment?

There are a couple of reasons why you may not receive the payment, even if you're claiming benefits. You won't be eligible if your benefit is reduced to £0 - this is sometimes called a "nil award" - in the qualifying period. But you may still be eligible for a cost of living payment if you received a "nil award" and one of the following applies:

  • Money was taken off your benefit for payment of rent to your landlord or for money you owe
  • You had a hardship payment

The second reason why you may not be entitled to the cost of living payment is if you claim Tax Credits and your entitlement for the tax year is below £26.

How will I know when I've been paid?

The payment will show in your bank account as your National Insurance Number followed by DWP COL. The HMRC payment reference will be HMRC COLS.

Do I need to apply for it?

No, the money will be sent automatically to your bank account - this means you won't need to apply for it. The DWP and HMRC will never contact you via text message or ask for personal details.

What if I don't receive the payment?

If you don't receive the money by February 23, you can report this to GOV.UK.
