Derby County announce interim boss after sacking of Paul Warne

Matt Hamshaw has been handed the task of helping Derby County avoid an eighth straight defeat when they go to Norwich City tomorrow (3pm).

The Rams’ first team coach has been put in temporary charge of the team after Paul Warne was sacked this afternoon.

The Derby County website added: “He will be supported by under-21s lead coach Jake Buxton, assistant under-18s coach Bradley Johnson and first team goalkeeper coach Andy Warrington and the rest of the existing backroom staff.”

Hamshaw, 43, followed Warne to Pride Park from hometown club Rotherham United in September 2022 after a playing career involving a variety of lower league clubs, including Sheffield Wednesday, Mansfield Town, Notts County and Macclesfield Town.

Announcing Warne’s dismissal, a Derby County statement said: “It is with regret that Derby County have decided to relieve Paul Warne of his position.”

Club owner David Clowes added: “Paul is a man of great integrity and embodies the values we hold important at Derby County. No fan should ever forget his contribution in securing promotion to the Championship. I certainly won’t.

“However, results in football dictate decisions and we felt that to give us the best chance of retaining our Championship status, the time was right to make a change.

“Paul goes with our thanks, gratitude and best wishes. He and his family will always be welcome at Pride Park.”

Derby’s latest defeat with Warne in charge, a 1-0 home loss to promotion-chasers Sheffield United , sparked a torrent of boos from the terraces, prompting Warne to claim: “It's a little bit like being a panto dame”.

But the club have acted after the Rams’ worst run of league results for 17 years leaves them in the Championship relegation zone, two points from safety and now facing a tough trip to Carrow Road for Hamshaw and Co to negotiate.
