David Moyes hits out at VAR amid Edouard Mendy verdict after West Ham's dramatic Chelsea defeat

West Ham United manager has branded the game-changing VAR decision in the Hammers’ 2-1 defeat to Chelsea as “ridiculously bad.”

The Hammers fell to defeat at Stamford Bridge to their London rivals but in the 90th minute, thought they had struck a late equaliser when Maxwel Cornet came off the bench to net a late equaliser after Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy fumbled the ball at the end of a loose Reece James backpass.

However, shortly after Cornet thought he had equalised, referee Andrew Madley consulted the pitchside monitor as a result of instructions from VAR official Jarred Gillett.

The goal was disallowed with Jarrod Bowen judged to have caught Mendy with his trailing leg in the build up to the goal, costing West Ham a deserved point in the game.

Moyes did not hold back in his frustrations after the game and felt that VAR was just as culpable for the decision as the on-field referee was.

“Have you seen it? The goalkeeper comes to take it and actually fumbles it out of his hands,” said Moyes. “It actually comes out about five or six yards, so he could never recover it, then he acts as if he's got a shoulder injury.

“We took it, we picked it up. I am amazed that VAR sent the referee to see it. I thought, because I had a quick glimpse at the side, once I saw it I thought even if he goes to the TV, there's no way he's overturning this because this is a goal. It was a ridiculously bad decision.

“I think I’d question VAR today as much as the referee. He should have stuck to his own guns and been big enough to do what he said.”
