Cervical Cancer
Zambia steps up cervical cancer screening with HPV testing
Zambia has the third highest burden of cervical cancer in the world, with an incidence rate of 65.5 per 100,000 women and a mortality rate of 43.4 per 100,000 women in 2020. Despite being a preventable and treatable disease, cervical cancer accounts for a significant number of deaths among women in Zambia.
Recognizing the urgent need to address this issue, Zambia has taken proactive measures to enhance cervical cancer screening. One of the key initiatives is the implementation of HPV testing, which is considered a more accurate method for detecting cervical cancer and its precursors. By adopting this advanced screening technique, Zambia aims to improve early detection and treatment outcomes, ultimately reducing the burden of cervical cancer in the country.
