Bonfire Night
When is Bonfire Night 2022?
Every year on the 5th of November, the United Kingdom celebrates Bonfire Night. In 2022, this event will be held on the same date. It is a tradition that has been followed for centuries to commemorate the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot.
Why do we celebrate it with fireworks?
The main reason behind celebrating Bonfire Night with fireworks is to recreate the failed attempt by Guy Fawkes and his associates to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605. The plot was discovered, and Fawkes was arrested, leading to his execution.
Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot explained
Guy Fawkes was a member of a group of English Catholics who wanted to assassinate King James I by blowing up the Parliament. The conspirators stored barrels of gunpowder in the basement of the building. However, their plan was uncovered, and Fawkes was caught guarding the explosives.
Since then, the 5th of November has been celebrated as Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Night. It is a time when people gather around bonfires, burn effigies of Guy Fawkes, and set off fireworks to remember the failed plot and the importance of preserving the government and democracy.
Remember, remember, the fifth of November!
