"Set to depart" Kamarai Swyer to leave West Ham for League Two ...

Hammers youngster Kamarai Simon-Swyer is set to depart the club this summer as he has been given permission to train with League Two club Gillingham.

The Redbridge-born winger signed for the club at the age of eight, he has been highly rated in the West Ham academy since signing a two-year scholarship in 2019. Swyer made his U18 Premier League South debut in a 2-1 home win over Swansea City in August of that year, aged 16 years and eight months. He would go on to make his FA Youth Cup debut in a third-round defeat by Charlton Athletic in December and scored five goals and assisted two in 12 appearances in all competitions.

Swyer signed his first professional contract at the club on his 18th birthday after becoming a member of the U23’s squad. Like many others, Swyer made his first and only first-team appearance in the 3-0 win over FCSB in the Europa Conference League group stages.

The winger joined Crawley Town on loan last summer after the pre-season tour in Australia with West Ham. He scored one goal and provided two assists in 11 matches for the Reds.

Despite not really impressing at Crawley, Swyer has been given a chance at the same level by Gillingham manager Mark Bonner. Speaking to KentOnline, Mark Bonner revealed that the 21-year-old striker has been training with the Gills at the start of pre-season so they can take a closer look at him.

Bonner said: “It’s a good chance for us to have a look at him before we make a decision on whether we do anything on that one, and whether he wants to do it. It is an option of many in those attacking positions, pleased to see him play and one for us to think about.”
