Alexander Isak boosts impressive stat following 61 win over Spurs
Alexander Isak improved his excellent goalscoring record in 2022/23 by adding a brace during Newcastle's 6-1 demolition of Spurs.

Alexander Isak continued his rich vein of form with a double during Newcastle’s incredible 6-1 thrashing of Spurs.

With his second brace of the season, the Swedish striker further demonstrated his ability to simply get goals. He is now up to 10 Premier League strikes in 2022/23, coming from just 11 starts and 15 total appearances.

Isak’s reduced time on the pitch comes as a result of some injury issues. A thigh problem has blighted his first campaign in England, ruling him out for three months over the winter. However, when he has been available, Isak has looked every bit worth the £63 million that Newcastle spent on him last summer.

The Swede has been incredibly impactful in front of goal during the 2022/23 season. In fact, his record per 90 minutes puts him just behind a certain Erling Haaland.

Per FB Ref, Alexander Isak averages 0.93 goals per 90 minutes played in the league this season – the second-highest rate among players who have played a minimum of 30 minutes in each appearance.

Manchester City’s Haaland, unsurprisingly, leads the PL in Goals/90 at a staggering 1.29 per game. Nevertheless, Isak is the next best and showed his clinical nature once more on Sunday afternoon.

Newcastle 6-1 Spurs: Isak and Murphy bag braces in rout

An explosive start from Newcastle United set the Magpies up for an emphatic 6-1 victory over fellow UCL-chasers Spurs.

It took the home side just two minutes to steal an advantage. Jacob Murphy provided the goal, being sharpest to a rebound to fire Newcastle ahead almost immediately. Shortly after, a brilliantly composed Joelinton finish doubled the Toon Army’s advantage.

Fans at St James’ Park were then in disbelief as the hosts grabbed a third within the first ten minutes. Murphy got his name on the scoresheet once more via a thumping effort from range.

Spurs – who had switched to a back four for this game – were reeling. Newcastle thus continued their onslaught when Joe Willock’s fabulous pass found Alexander Isak, who coolly dispatched his first of the game. The Swedish international added a second two minutes later with another clinical finish.

Tottenham had been hit by a whirlwind in the Northeast, heading into the interval 5-0 down. They did manage to respond in the second half as Harry Kane popped up with a goal. But this brought little solace to the travelling contingent, with their comeback ending there.

Callum Wilson came off the bench to score Newcastle’s sixth of the day, sealing a memorable victory.

Speaking after the game, Alexander Isak hailed the win as a “statement” performance.

Alexander Isak: “It was incredible”

The Newcastle striker told Chronicle Live that the Toon’s stunning performance was in response to the Aston Villa game. Last week, Eddie Howe’s side suffered a disappointing 3-0 loss at Villa Park.

“It was kind of a statement after last week at Villa. To come back and give a performance like this shows a lot,” said Isak. “It was incredible. From the first minute we showed that we really wanted this – and it paid off. It was 3-0 after nine minutes; that’s incredible too.

“Most things went right, and we scored our chances,” added the Swede on Newcastle’s play. “We were solid defensively, too. Overall, we’re happy with it.”

Newcastle now hold their Champions League destiny in their own hands. They are six points clear of Spurs in fifth, in addition to having a game in hand over them. Their next match – a Thursday night showdown at relegation-threatened Everton – could see them add to their point advantage.
