Eddie Izzards life from gender identity private love life and Jeremy
Eddie Izzard has had a hugely successful career in comedy and acting, but the star has also been open about her personal life, including her gender identity and love life

Comedian Eddie Izzard first shot to fame with her stand-up breakthrough at an AIDS fundraiser at the London Palladium in 1991 and has since carved out an illustrious career.

Eddie has graced the silver screen in blockbuster hits such as Ocean's 12 and 13, My Super Ex-Girlfriend, Valkyrie, The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian, and Velvet Goldmine.

Her talents have also shone through on television, with memorable performances in acclaimed US dramas like Hannibal, Powers, and The Good Wife.

Beyond entertainment, Eddie harbours political ambitions, having campaigned to run as the Labour candidate for Sheffield Central in the 2022 general election.

On the personal front, Eddie has been open about being transgender since 1985 and made a significant announcement in December 2020, expressing her wish to be "based in girl mode from now on", reports Yorkshire Live.

The 62-year-old has declared her preference for she/her pronouns, requesting that people respect her identity. The revelation came during Eddie's appearance on the Sky Arts series Portrait Artist of the Year.

From a young age, Eddie understood her transgender identity, recognising it at just four years old.

Jeremy Clarkson, the face of Clarkson's Farm, stirred controversy in 2022 with his failure to consistently use Eddie Izzard's correct pronouns during a celebrity edition of Who Wants to be A Millionaire?

Jeremy stumbled over Eddie's pronouns, saying: "She, them, it. I don't know what you say! She? She?" Despite the audience incorrectly suggesting 'they', Jeremy continued: "They... whatever he is. I knew there was a word. There was a pronoun I had forgotten. They were very good."

A staunch Labour supporter, Eddie is no stranger to Sheffield politics, having actively campaigned for the party in the city.

Opening up about her deep connection with Sheffield, a city she fell for during her university days, Eddie reminisced: "Sheffield has a proud history, showing grit and determination in overcoming adversities and it was the wit and generosity of the people of this city that made me feel welcome when I first arrived in 1980 - the year the Leadmill opened.

"I'm standing to be the next Labour MP for Sheffield Central to support the city that has supported me. To take the fight to the Tories and get Keir Starmer into Number 10."

When questioned about her personal life, Eddie is known for her discretion. The celebrated actor is currently single and candidly discusses the complexities of dating as a transgender woman.

She shared with The Daily Mail: "I would like to start dating, but it's complicated with me being a trans woman. It's going to have to be a very confident and strong-minded woman who has a relationship with me."

Eddie also touched on her past relationship with British singer, director, and producer Sarah Townsend, whom she met at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1989. Despite the end of their romantic involvement, they have maintained a friendship.

On the topic of family, Eddie has aspirations: "I would love to have kids one day, but I am trying to work out how to do that."

Eddie Izzard will appear on BBC's Saturday Kitchen on Saturday at 10am.
