Bristol City vs Manchester City – LIVE!

Pep Guardiola takes Manchester City side to Championship opposition in the form of Bristol City in the FA Cup tonight. Having seen rivals Manchester United claim the Carabao Cup – a trophy Guardiola had developed a tight grip on during his time in England – the FA Cup takes much more precedence.

It is so far the one competition in England Guardiola has not been able to win more than once and, with neither the Premier League or the Champions League looking nailed-on, it also offers another chance of a crack at some silverware.

Still, Wigan shocked City a few years ago and Bristol City cannot be overlooked. The history of this competition is littered with upsets and the Robins did push Guardiola’s side all the way in the Carabao Cup at the semi-final stage in 2018. Pep Guardiola expecting tough Bristol City challenge

While the Premier League champions are clear favourites of course, Pep Guardiola is not taking the challenge of Bristol City lightly.

“They have no defeats in their past 12 games,” he said. “That gives me a lot of information.

“It means they are there, and the scouts there are a good team. Their manager has a lot of experience and I know him from when he managed Leicester and Watford.

“It’s always tough when you go away from home against a Championship team. At home, it would be different but we are going to fly there tomorrow, try to do a good game and to go through.

“It’s an important competition and it is a serious team that will play there.”

FA Cup draw: Start time, how to watch, quarter-final ball numbers

The FA Cup quarter-final draw takes place on Wednesday night, with Wembley drawing ever closer for those still in the competition.

Over the next two days, the eight fifth-round ties will be played, with Manchester City’s trip to Bristol City the pick of the action tonight. Fulham also host Leeds in what could prove to be an entertaining all-Premier League clash.

On Wednesday night, Tottenham travel to face Sheffield United, while Manchester United, fresh off their Carabao Cup success at Wembley, are at home to West Ham.

Bristol City actually edge the historical head to head, but have lost five of the last six meetings dating all the way back to 1979.

The two sides have met in the League Cup three times this century, with Manchester City winning 2-1 in 2007 and then triumphing in both legs of a semi-final back in 2018.

Prediction: Man City to win 3-1

Cup ties against lower-league opposition have generally been a walk in the park for Manchester City over recent times, with a number of absolute maulings coming to mind.

However, this is likely to be an altogether tougher test with Bristol City on that long unbeaten streak and looking up in 2023 after a mixed season otherwise.

You’d back Pep’s men to get the job done here with room to spare, especially if he sticks to his pledge of playing a strong team amid their title push, but there are likely to be one or two hairy moments along the way.

Manchester City to win, 3-1.

Man City team news: De Bruyne could play

Guardiola has pledged to play a “serious team” on Wednesday as he expects a tough test from a Bristol City side high on confidence.

Defenders John Stones and Aymeric Laporte are both back in training after a hamstring injury and illness respectively, while Kevin De Bruyne is also feeling much better after his own bout of illness that saw him miss the trip to Leipzig and stay on the bench at Bournemouth.

Bristol City team news: Wells to start

The hosts are missing defenders Rob Atkinson and Kal Naismith through injury, while January signings Anis Mehmeti and Harry Cornick are both cup-tied. Pearson has already confirmed that top scorer Nahki Wells will start up top after goals in back-to-back outings against Sunderland and Hull.
