Clevedon residents facing more nights of seafront roadworks
Several roads across the town will be closed

Fed up residents face having to endure more disturbed nights as further work on Clevedon seafront is carried out. People living around The Beach, Marine Parade and Alexandra Road were left surprised yesterday (January 25) to learn work was taking place to resurface roads and pavements - with overnight road closures in place.

Some residents said they had not been informed of the overnight road closures while others said a letter had been pushed through their doors giving just hours notice. The work, part of a major remodelling of the seafront, will see The Beach, Marine Parade and part of Alexandra Road close from 7.15pm.

The closures will be lifted by 7am. The first closure was last night (January 25) with further closures planned for tonight (January 26) and Friday (January 27). The council has warned it may also need to close the roads overnight on Monday (January 30).

A North Somerset Council spokesman said: “The Beach, Marine Parade and part of Alexandra Road will be closed over several nights from January 25 to enable the road and pavements to be resurfaced near the pier. The Beach and Marine Parade between Seavale Road will be closed from 7.15pm on Thursday and Friday night.

“The western end of Alexandra Road, west of Copse Road, will be closed some of the time. We may also need to close the roads on Monday night.”

“The road closure will be removed from 7am each morning.” The council said that during the road closure contractors would maintain access to properties ‘wherever possible.’

The spokesman added: “During the works our contractor will facilitate vehicular access to and from properties wherever possible. However this may not be possible if works are happening directly outside a property.

“We advise people to park outside of the works area if this is possible and apologise for any inconvenience caused.” This is not the first time people living around the seafront have been disturbed by overnight works to the seafront.

People also faced sleepless nights while work to the new seafront road layout was installed. Businesses also saw a drop in trade due to road closure.

The changes to the seafront, which has seen The Beach made one way, a new segregated cycle lane installed and parking reconfigured, have proved unpopular with residents who say the scheme is dangerous and are calling for the changes to be reversed.
