Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid score result as Blancos comeback
The Copa del Rey quarterfinals provided a Madrid derby that saw Real Madrid advance past rivals Atleti in comeback fashion thanks to a Rodrygo stunner and Karim Benzema extra-time winner.

Real Madrid sputtered their way through another first half, pegged back by their local rivals as the Copa del Rey quarterfinal derby reached halftime. An Alvaro Morata goal had Atletico Madrid leading, and it felt a long way back for the hosts at the Bernabeu who had little to savor at the break.

Enter late-game specialists Rodrygo and Karim Benzema, who provided the necessary firepower when all seemed lost. First, the young Brazilian crafted a moment of sheer brilliance, as his stunning solo goal broke Diego Simeone's heart and sent the match to extra-time.

Then, it was Benzema's turn to play hero. With a recent man advantage thanks to Sefan Savic's sending off, the Frenchman put Madrid up for good in extra-time as he has so often done before, and there was no way back for the visitors.

Vinicius Jr had the last laugh, putting the match away with the last kick of the game to put an exclamation point on a difficult day for him. The match came in the aftermath of a racist gesture by Atletico Madrid fans who hung a mannequin wearing his jersey from a local overpass.

Real Madrid will rue injuries to both Ferland Mendy early and Rodrygo late, but the victory is a sweet one nonetheless as they advance to the Copa del Rey semifinals and look ahead to continuing their La Liga title battle. Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, have little to take from this defeat as they are out of the domestic Cup competition, following their elimination from European competition and big gap in the league table.

120+1 min: GOAL! REAL MADRID! Vinicius Jr puts this match away! He snatches the ball off Pablo Barrios with help from Dani Ceballos, and while the entire Atletico Madrid defense things he's going to the corner flag, he goes to goal and finishes past Jan Oblak with very little challenge.

119th min: Real Madrid have a decent move forward on the break but can't get a shot off and Jan Oblak collects. Atletico Madrid have had very little in front of the Real goal mouth since the Depay chance.

114th min: This is a huge concern for Real Madrid as Rodrygo, who only came on in the 69th minute, limps off for Mario Martin. They'll hope he's ok, as he remains a critical piece of this Real Madrid team even when not starting. Nacho Fernandez also comes out, replaced by Alvaro Odriozola.

112th min: Chance, Atletico Madrid! How have Real Madrid survived that? The ball bobbles around the penalty area as Real can't clear, and Memphis Depay gets his boot to it, but it has no power and can't beat Thibaut Courtois. That was a dangerous moment!

Moments later, they have another look but Yannick Carrasco in space sends a shot into orbit, pressured only by Eder Militao.

108th min: Atletico Madrid are pushing forward knowing they have nothing to lose in this Cup match. A free-kick opportunity on the left flank is wasted after Yannick Carrasco is fouled. Carrasco reacts angrily, and will need to keep a lid on things if he wants to stay on the pitch.

105th min: The second half of extra-time kicks off with Atletico Madrid now facing a man disadvantage and a one-goal deficit. During the break, Koke got a yellow card for screaming at the referees while in a jacket. He was subbed off back in the 83rd minute.

104th min: GOAL! REAL MADRID! Los Blancos have snatched the lead at home, and who else but Karim Benzema to provide the finish! Somehow, inexplicably, the horizontal cross from Marco Asensio evades both Rodrygo and Vinicius Jr, but it falls to the right man Benzema at the far post completely unmarked. He's not going to miss that, squeezing it past Jan Oblak at the near post.

99th min: RED CARD! Stefan Savic is sent off for earning a second yellow! He comes flying in on Eduardo Camavinga with two feet, a totally unnecessary challenge! Camavinga was headed down the touchline towards the corner flag, not cutting inside towards a dangerous position. He's off, and Real Madrid are now primed to pour on the pressure for the final 20 minutes of extra time!

97th min: Vinicius Jr is fouled by Stefan Savic on the left edge, and there's some pushing and shoving after the whistle. The Brazilian is booked for his protests, which seems a bit harsh.

— Joel Beya (@joelbeya) January 26, 2023

94th min: Vinicius Jr sets the Bernabeu crowd alight by absolutely clowning Stefan Savic on the end line. There's no passing option, but he wins the corner, and turns to the Real fans behind the goal to emphatically pump them up. The Brazilian is buzzing!

Antonio Rudiger came somewhat close with a header on the ensuing corner, but it deflects off Axel Witsel's head and goes wide. The referee gives a goal kick, and few are there to protest.

Kickoff: This match will play 30 more minutes to decide a winner. If there's still nothing between the sides, then we go to a penalty shootout! Surprisingly, Diego Simeone has withdrawn Antoine Griezmann as we start extra time, with Pablo Barrios introduced.

We should have known we'd end up here in extra time...

FULLTIME: Real Madrid 1-1 Atletico Madrid

The second half has been just as disjointed for both sides as the first, but Rodrygo produced a moment of sheer brilliance and leveled the score. It was a moment to remember for Rodrygo who is becoming a late-game specialist. On to extra time we go!

Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid: Second half

89th min: The game has devolved just a bit, as Atletico Madrid are the ones asking questions down the stretch. Memphis Depay tests Thibaut Courtois from a very tight angle and wins a corner. Five minutes of added time until extra-time.

84th min: Chance, Atletico Madrid! How has Antoine Griezmann missed??? Axel Witsel threads a wonderful ball through the Real Madrid trees and springs the Frenchman, but he's rifled it way over the crossbar with only with the goalkeeper to beat! Replay shows Griezmann was offside anyways, and it would have been ruled out, so he can breathe a little deeper knowing it wouldn't have counted.

83rd min: Atletico Madrid makes another two substitutions in midfield as they prepare to play for extra-time. Rodrigo de Paul is withdrawn and looks to be struggling some, replaced by Geoffrey Kondogbia, while Saul comes in for Koke. The plaudits for Rodrygo continue to rain down after that unbelievable goal.

The ability to step up and perform when your star teammates aren't quite on it is an invaluable skill to have. Rodrygo Goes certainly has it. Benzema and Vinicius haven't been quite as sharp as usual tonight for Real Madrid, but Rodrygo has been superb since coming on.

— Alex Brotherton (@alex_brotherton) January 26, 2023

78th min: GOAL! REAL MADRID! THAT'S A STUNNER FROM RODRYGO! SIMPLY SENSATIONAL! THAT'S A PUSKAS CONTENDER! The Real Madrid substitute dances around no less than four Atletico Madrid defenders with dizzying skill, before poking past Jan Oblak with the outside of his foot. An utterly stunning, glittering, exceptional goal to equalise the match!

It was always going to take a moment of brilliance from someone in white, as Real Madrid don't quite seem to be combining well, and Rodrygo is the man to provide.

73rd min: Chance, Atletico Madrid! Antoine Griezmann produces a sensational free-kick, rifling a missile past the wall, but Thibaut Courtois is there to parry it away! On the ensuing corner, Alex Witsel has a great chance but can't get his bicycle kick on target.

Memphis Depay comes on for Atletico Madrid as does Yannick Carrasco, with Thomas Lemar and Angel Correa to exit. Marco Asensio enters for Madrid,

69th min: Dani Ceballos earns Real Madrid's first yellow card for scything down Angel Correa on the break. Moments before, Mario Hermoso produced a big block to keep a hammer from Karim Benzema out.

Fede Valverde comes off for Rodrygo. Surprising that change wasn't made a good 10-15 minutes earlier. Marco Asensio readies to enter.

66th min: Real Madrid remain the dominant possessional side but they've lost some of the edge they seemed to be building.

Fede Valverde misplays literally a 3-foot pass to Benzema in front of him. It's all gone wrong for the Uruguayan. He did have a wonderful delivery for Benzema earlier that the Frenchman missed, but it would have been called back for offside had it produced a goal.

61st min: Atletico Madrid have a rare venture forward and Angel Correa swings at a bobbling ball, putting it on frame but right at Thibaut Courtois. Mario Hermoso then absorbs a blatant yellow card for blocking off Vinicius on the break, as the Brazilian produced a lovely bit of skill to round the Atletico defender.

Looks like Axel Witsel will be coming on soon, as Diego Simeone is going to add a defensive-minded player. He does come on, and replaces Alvaro Morata which is a VERY defensive substitution.

58th min: Chance, Real Madrid! The hosts come close again, and it feels like a matter of time! Karim Benzema's left-footed rip from the top of the penalty area centrally is a great one, but Jan Oblak goes full-stretch to keep it out! On the rebound, Vinicius is nearly there for the tap-in, but he's foiled at the goal mouth by a sensational tackle from Stefan Savic.

53rd min: Chance, Real Madrid! Their best chance of the match! Nacho rifles in a low cross, and Federico Valverde looks to produce a back-heel finish. While that would have been sensational, his attempt instead ruined a much easier finish for Vinicius Jr. The poor Uruguayan, who was in such sensational form earlier this season, can't seem to do anything right. Still, Real Madrid look suddenly energised.

Reinildo gets a yellow card in the aftermath for tackling Eder Militao on the flank, blocking off the Brazilian defender.

52nd min: Real Madrid have a corner and Atletico Madrid pack themselves in. It's going to be a tall task for Real Madrid to find a goal through all the trees. Federico Valverde goes for the spectacular but whiffs on his bicycle kick attempt on a second successive corner delivery.

50th min: Alvaro Morata is down and needs lengthy treatment after a coming together with Eder Militao. Looks like he took an accidental knee to the calf, which can be painful. Morata wants a foul, referee didn't agree, and that time the official had it right. Nothing in it.

47th min: A blatant dive from Vinicius goes unpunished, as the referee has a quick chat with the Brazilian but doesn't issue a yellow card. He's lucky for that one, as he quite clearly threw his body to the ground inside the left edge of the penalty area.

We just don't look right. Body language and swagger is gone too.

— Managing Madrid (@managingmadrid) January 26, 2023

Kickoff: At this point, nothing from Carlo Ancelotti off the bench as he sticks with the starting lineup (minus the one forced change just before the break). That's a surprise, but he can't have a long leash for the players struggling to this point.

HALFTIME: Real Madrid 0-1 Atletico Madrid

A feisty and physical first half comes to a close and the visitors are comfortably on top. It's been a really rough first 45 minutes for Real Madrid, who were utterly disjointed in the attack and scattered at the back. The loss of Ferland Mendy deepens the injury crisis and forces the side to slot players in at awkward positions.

Atletico Madrid seem quite comfortable with their one-goal lead, and are in control of the match for the most part. They venture forward in moments, attacking wide areas, but are happy to absorb pressure in phases.

The right flank for Real Madrid has been awful, and Fede Valverde's poor form is a big part of that. It's possible Carlo Ancelotti could make a halftime change...

Rodrygo warming up, have to assume he enters the field for Valverde.

Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid: First half

45+2 min: Federico Valverde remains in awful form. Real Madrid break well three-on-three, but Los Blancos see the chance fizzle out as Valverde delivers a horrid horizontal ball to Karim Benzema at the top of the box. It's telegraphed, and easily intercepted.

Fede far from his best today.

— Warriors of Uruguay (@UruguayanHeroes) January 26, 2023

45th min: Finally the first yellow card of the match, and it's a deserved one as Rodrigo de Paul is booked for yanking back Dani Ceballos by both shoulders. Can't have an argument with that one. Take the yellow card overs for the second half, this one's going to get even more intense after the break.

43rd min: With all the defensive injuries for Real Madrid, they're forced into another change as Ferland Mendy can't continue. After playing a man down for a number of minutes, Dani Ceballos finally comes in and Eduardo Camavinga takes over at left-back. Dire for Carlo Ancelotti.

38th min: This one is starting to boil over from a physicality standpoint, as challenges come flying in from all players and all directions. Eduardo Camavinga is bulldozed by Antoine Griezmann, before it's given right back moments later. The fans are getting more vocal with the refereeing decisions, and Atletico Madrid players surround the official Cesar Soto Grado during a stoppage. Somehow, incredibly, no yellow cards have been shown yet.

Ferland Mendy is down and the body language isn't great, which is a worry for Real Madrid. He gets up and looks to continue, but has a grimace on his face and keeps looking to the bench. The substitutes begin to stir, already down a number of full-backs.

34th min: Atletico Madrid continuing to find joy on the flanks getting behind the Real Madrid full-backs. This time a cross in from the left just evades a sliding Alvaro Morata in front of goal, with Antonio Rudiger tight to the Spanish striker's hip.

30th min: As the half-hour mark comes & goes, Real Madrid feels like they've lost control of this match. The goal has proven a sucker punch, and Madrid have failed to create anything dangerous since. Atletico happy to sit back and continue to poke and prod on the counter.

Just as I say that, Vinicius Jr is brought down on the left edge of the penalty area by Stefan Savic, giving Madrid a good set-piece opportunity. It's a good chance for Madrid as Jan Oblak comes out to punch but misses, and it awkwardly hits Eder Militao in the head on the goal mouth.

Real Madrid just had one of the wildest set-piece misses I've ever seen.

Incredible curling delivery, hits Morata in the head which puts everyone off. Oblak whiffs, Valverde misses, literally bonks Militao in the head on the goal mouth.

— Kyle Bonn (@the_bonnfire) January 26, 2023

25th min: Federico Valverde has a go from a very deep distance, but Jan Oblak has no trouble getting down low to cover it up. Madrid feel a bit in panic mode, shell-shocked after the opening goal which came somewhat against the run of play.

The goal earlier from Atletico seems to have put a damper on a planned show of support for Vinicius Jr after the horrible racist incident earlier this morning. That's a bit of a shame. Supporting players in times of adversity should come before the result of the match.

The 20th minute of the derby was supposed to have a big ovation for Vinícius. But, few joined in. You could almost hear a pin drop. Probably cause Atleti scored one min before and basically sucked all the air out the stadium.

— Euan McTear (@emctear) January 26, 2023

19th min: GOAL! ATLETICO MADRID! The goalless streak at the Bernabeu is snapped and the visitors are in front! It's started by a brilliant ball over the top of the Real Madrid back line by Koke, coming to Nahuel Molina. He cuts it across to Alvaro Morata for the easy finish, and Atleti take the early lead.

It's yet another example of poor Madrid defending, as Eder Militao let Morata run free and the original run from Molina wasn't spotted at the far post. Watching the video again, it looks like Ferland Mendy had stepped to Angel Correa, and Vinicius Jr just flat out let Molina run free without following.

— Nico Cantor (@Nicocantor1) January 26, 2023

16th min: Real Madrid are slowly getting closer and closer. A corner is defended well by Atletico Madrid, but it takes a few tries for them to truly clear, including a great tackle on the edge of the penalty area, plus some luck as Toni Kroos straight-up slips. Atleti have yet to really build forward like the hosts. This game remains a simmer to start, but has the chance to explode open soon.

13th min: Federico Valverde and Vinicius Jr have both been suffering from a severe dip in form. Despite his missed opportunity earlier, Vinicius looks in a mood today, but Valverde has yet to provide anything positive through the first 15 minutes or so.

9th min: Chance, Real Madrid! How did Vinicius not even get a shot off there??? The Brazilian streaks forward and plays a great one-two with Karim Benzema, but when he received the return ball in acres of space in front of net, he fails to get a shot off before Reinildo comes across to dispossess. It felt like a sure goal!

That was great work by Vini, but should've shot it 1st time

— Managing Madrid (@managingmadrid) January 26, 2023

5th min: Atletico Madrid have a good spell of possession that results in a corner, but the delivery from the set-piece is extremely poor and doesn't beat the first man. The high energy start continues, but yet to produce any goal-mouth action...

3rd min: Neither team has any real go on goal in the first few minutes, but you can see how important this match is to the players. Real Madrid players are running very vertically on the ball, with Karim Benzema dropping extremely deep to receive the ball and help in the build-up.

Alvaro Morata looks to get on the ball in the final third as well, but it's cut out. Very good energy to this so far, a promising start for neutrals.

Kickoff: The match is under way, right on time! How rare is that now? The crowd sounds in full voice at the Bernabeu!

37 mins to kick: The hosts will be looking for a lockdown first 45 minutes today, and for good reason. Amazingly, in their recent matches against Barcelona and Villarreal, Real Madrid conceded multiple first-half goals in consecutive games for the first time in nearly a decade. A few injuries have disrupted things, but no enough to cause such a slide like this. Their clean sheet against Athletic Club was a good first step in the right direction, but they'll need to prove it against a more consistent attacking side like Atletico Madrid.

This is the first time since May 2013 that Real Madrid have conceded 2 goals in the first half of consecutive games. That was 540 games ago.

— Sam Leveridge (@samleveridge) January 19, 2023

60 mins to kick: The Atletico Madrid lineup is out. Just like today's opponent, Diego Simeone also had questions in midfield. He goes with Koke and Rodrigo de Paul at the anchor, with Geoffrey Kondogbia and Axel Witsel sat on the bench again.

Antoine Griezmann will sit behind Alvaro Morata, with Memphis Depay and Yannick Carrasco benched.

83 mins to kick: Here's a wild stat for you.

While these two teams have traded results against each other over the past few years, one thing has become somewhat evident — Atletico Madrid can't score at the Bernabeu. Atletico Madrid have gone four straight true road matches against their cross-town rivals without scoring.

Antoine Griezmann has the last Atletico Madrid at the Bernabeu, coming all the way back on April 8, 2018, an equalizer which led to an eventual 1-1 draw in La Liga play. Since then, Griezmann has won a World Cup with France, transferred to Barcelona, scored 35 goals for Bracelona, been loaned back to Atletico Madrid, signed permanently with Atletico Madrid, and lost a World Cup final with France. The Atleti scoreless streak at the Bernabeu is up to 393 consecutive minutes.

97 mins to kick: The Real Madrid lineup is out and Carlo Ancelotti has taken sides in one of the more fascinating tactical decisions. Toni Kroos and Luka Modric have been in incredibly poor form of late, especially the German. Both were benched for the recent win over Athletic Club, and Dani Ceballos starred in their place.

So what does Ancelotti do? He certainly can't just bench two extremely important and valuable players thanks to a short run of crappy form, but sitting Ceballos would be spitting in the face of a prime player who worked hard to earn his place and played well. Can he rotate the two aging greats until if/when Ceballos falls off? We'll get an idea as to his thinking today when the Real Madrid lineup is released.

Well, we have our answer. With the Copa del Rey, Ancelotti has afforded Modric and Kroos the chance to regain their form, with Ceballos sat. It's likely that a stinker from either would see Ceballos back into the lineup for Sunday against Real Sociedad.

120 mins to kick: Local derbies can get fierce, especially one featuring two massive clubs such as the ones in Madrid. Still, there are lines that cannot be crossed, and one of those boundaries was pushed as a mannequin wearing a Vinicius Jr jersey was found in the early hours of the morning hanging from an overpass in Madrid. The mannequin was accompanied by a banner that read "Madrid hates Real."

It's a disgusting act of racism towards a black player, one who has been the recipient of things like this before. Last September, Vinicius was subjected to racist chants during the Madrid derby at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid lineups & team news

A few injuries have sapped Real Madrid of their depth. The most notable issue is with Aurelien Tchouameni, who remains out after picking up an injury at the World Cup, forcing Eduardo Camavinga into action. David Alaba is back fit, and could enter to give Eder Militao a rest.

Eden Hazard cropped up with an ankle injury in training and is out for this match, while Lucas Vazquez and Dani Carvajal are also sidelined. Vazquez's ankle issue is a weeks-long problem that could leave him out of action until March.

One decision Carlo Ancelotti faced is in midfield, where aging greats Luca Modric and Toni Kroos are out of form. Dani Ceballos was great off the bench against Villarreal, and then stayed positive after earning the start against Athletic Club on the weekend. Ancelotti has returned both to the lineup, using a domestic Cup match to give them a chance to regain form.

Real Madrid confirmed starting lineup (3-5-2): Courtois (GK) — N. Fernandez, Rudiger, Militao, Mendy — Kroos, Camavinga, Modric — F. Valverde, Benzema, Vinicius Jr.

Real Madrid subs (10): Lunin (GK), L. Lopez (GK), Vallejo, Arribas, Martin, Odorizola, Ceballos, Asensio, Rodrygo, M. Diaz.

Diego Simeone has nearly a fully fit squad available for selection, with only an issue for defender Jose Gimenez to worry about, and even he returns to the bench and could appear. The Uruguayan has been missing for the past two La liga matches, plus the last Copa del Rey match as well.

Otherwise, the squad is fully fit, meaning decisions have to be made, especially in midfield. Could Koke returns to start alongside Rodrigo de Paul, with Geoffrey Kondogbia and Axel Witsel on the bench. Alvaro Morata gets the start up front, with Memphis Depay on the bench.

There's also the situation around Yannick Carrasco to figure out, as he sits amidst rumors of a move to Barcelona swirling. Most reports seem to believe that Carrasco will not switch until the summer, but his time could be reduced if he's on his way out.

Atletico Madrid projected starting lineup (4-3-2-1): Oblak (GK) — Molina, Savic, Hermoso, Reinildo — Lemar, De Paul, de Paul — Correa, Griezmann — Morata.

Atletico Madrid subs (11): Grbic (GK), Gimenez, Reguilon, Felipe, Witsel, Kondogbia, Saul, Carrasco, Barrios, Depay, Carlos.

Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid betting odds & lines

Odds via BetMGM (USA), Sports Interaction (Canada), SkyBet (UK), and Neds (Australia).

As the hosts and more advanced side in the La Liga table, Real Madrid are understandable favorites, with Atletico Madrid at over 3/1 to emerge with a 90-minute victory on the road.

The bigger question is how the game will play out, with the under somewhat favored and a defensive battle expected. Atletico Madrid have long had a defensive reputation under Diego Simeone, but Real Madrid are also in poor goalscoring form, leading to the slight lean towards fewer goals.
