Philippe Coutinho has spoken of his “happiness” at Aston Villa after signing a four-year deal following a £17.2million transfer from Barcelona. The Brazilian has really felt at home at Villa Park after what was a turbulent time of it at the Camp Nou previously.

In his in-house interview with VillaTV , Coutinho spoke of the important of head coach Steven Gerrard, and said: “He’s been very important. First, he believed in me. We’ve known each other for a long time.

“I felt very welcomed by him and his staff when I arrived here. He’s a great manager, for sure, and I’m very happy to work with him and his staff. His ambitions are high and I believe in the same things as he believes in. I want to work hard to achieve what he believes in.”

On that very belief, Coutinho, 29, outlined how it must be Villa’s aims to play in Europe from 2023 onwards. “For sure, we can do better than we did this year,” he said. “We want to achieve things like playing in Europe. I believe so much in the squad and the work the staff are doing. We have to be playing in European games, that’s why we work hard.”

Elsewhere, Coutinho hinted at what’s to come with Gerrard planning on a really successful summer transfer window with elite-level quality set to be added to VIlla’s first-team group. “It’s a top group with great qualities,” the Brazilian added. “Everyone is ambitious to be better and to build a top group, a top team. For sure, my relationship with all of them is good. Like I mention JJ, Dougie, Emi, the other Emi… it’s a top place to be!”

Coutinho added: “I feel happy at the club. It’s been a good start but, of course, I want to do many more things with this club. I’m already looking forward to next year. I believe so much in this squad and this club. We can achieve good things for next year. When I arrived here I felt welcomed. I felt happiness. When you are happy, you can work better and give your best. That’s why I’m here, to work hard and to achieve good things with my teammates.”
