Uttoxeter's Adam Peaty takes gold at Commonwealth Games and has this to say over comments he made

The Staffordshire-born swimmer also took the opportunity to issue an apology following a backlash over a previous interview

Uttoxter's Adam Peaty has claimed the only major gold medal missing from his impressive collection after winning gold in the 50m breaststroke at the Commonwealth Games. The victory came after Peaty's impressive winning streak in the 100m was finally broken.

The 26-year-old swimmer also took the opportunity to apologise after his remarks in a previous interview after he lost at the Games sparked a backlash online. In an interview after his loss, Peaty said that it didn't matter as his ultimate aim was the Olympics, prompting many to comment that this was disrespectful.

Following his victory in the 50m breaststroke, Peaty apologised for the comments. In an interview with the BBC, he said he wanted to "be accountable" for the interview.

Peaty has been recovering from an injury after he broke his foot in a training accident ten weeks ago. He reflected that me may have expected too much as he was still getting better.

Speaking to the BBC after his latest victory, he said: "I am a much happier man. If anybody knows me, I fight. It means so much for me - what I've been through the past few months, the past five years. To get my spark back, that's what it is about.

"I am very happy. I want to be accountable for my interview. It came across very wrong and I apologise. A lot of people won't understand it.

"Sport is like this. I had to get myself up for it in my mind, with the crowd, and that is the result.

"You get knocked down seven times, you get up eight. That's the only one I haven't won in my career. Very happy. It isn't about stats - it's about racing."

Staffordshire County Council Cabinet Member for Communities Victoria Wilson congratulated Adam on his most recent achievement. She said: “Adam Peaty is no stranger to winning gold medals, but to do it so close to home is phenomenal. He is a truly remarkable sportsman who continues to show just how talented he is.

“Adam continues to make us proud with every achievement, and is a great role model for young people, especially the tenacity he has shown coming back from a broken foot and his sheer determination to win. It just shows what hard work and dedication can achieve, and I know that there will be young people in Staffordshire that will have been inspired by Adam, who is a fantastic role model.

“The whole of Staffordshire has behind Adam in all of his events—as they have been with all the Staffordshire athletes competing in the Commonwealth Games—and I have no doubt our county will be enjoying more sporting successes as the Games continue.”
